Chapter 7

Hailey loved Halloween. It was a reason for kids to use their imaginations to come up with costume ideas. She wasn’t a seamstress but could manage a few simple costumes if necessary.

The girls were easy. Fairies, angels, or princesses would do nicely. Brady was a different story. He went from wanting to dress up as a football player, to a violinist, to Spiderman. After much indecision, he decided to be a football player.

Though they had Halloween parties at school, the kids’ favorite celebration was the annual neighborhood party which took place in one of the twenty houses in Nick and Hailey’s small area. This year, their next-door neighbor was hosting the party. It would be held outside, as usual, allowing the annual treasure hunt to take place.

Hailey had arranged for Missy to come to their house. From there, they’d join the party.

When Missy showed up wearing a tiara, Hailey laughed out loud. “You’ll fit right in with the girls.”

Hailey watched as Zeke sniffed Missy and then wagged his tail and licked the hand she held out to him. Dogs were exceptional judges of people, and Missy had passed his test. Pleased, Hailey said, “Come on inside.”

“Who’s there?” Luna asked, approaching them wearing a silky blue princess outfit and a sparkly tiara. She stared up at Missy’s head. “You’re a princess too? Like me.”

“Luna, please say hello to Miss … Miss Missy …” Hailey stuttered over the name, unsure.

“Missy?” said Luna.

“Why don’t we make it easy and simply let the kids call me Missy,” Missy suggested. “A new beginning for me.”

“Great idea,” said Hailey. She wasn’t quite ready for the kids to call Missy grandma. That was Maddie’s name.

“Watch,” said Luna, twirling around in circles and waving a wand. “I’m dancing.”

“I like to dance too,” said Missy looking on.

April came running over to them. “Mommy, Luna took my wand. I want it back.”

“I can’t find mine,” said Luna, pulling the wand close to her. “I want hers.”

“Luna, you need to give April her wand. I’ll help you find yours,” said Hailey, hoping the spat would be over soon. Halloween evenings could be tough. She tried to limit sugary treats, but it was one day of the year when it was more difficult than most.

Brady walked over to them, wearing his football uniform.

Missy’s face turned white and then reddened as she managed a friendly expression.

Hailey put an arm around Brady. “I’d like you to meet someone special. Miss Missy, but we’re calling her Missy.”

Brady held out his hand as he’d been taught.

Missy took hold of it and shook it, beaming at him. “You look so much like a dear old friend of mine. I’m very pleased to meet you.”

He nodded, studied Missy’s tiara, and turned to Hailey. “Can you help me? I want to put on my shoulder pads. They make me look bigger.”

“Sure,” said Hailey. “Let me help Luna find her wand and then I’ll see what I can do.”

“That’s okay. Dad can do it. He said he and I can walk over to the Pierces’ together.
